Campaigns: Restoring Federal Funding to the Recovery Community Services Program in 2006

In early 2006, the federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced that in 2006 there would be no new funding for the only federal program that supports recovery community organizations around the country. The Recovery Community Services Program
(RCSP) provides grants to organizations that provide peer-to-peer recovery support services to individuals at every stage of their recovery, their family members, friends and allies. These activities are reuniting families, linking people to jobs, housing and support, and making sustained, long-term recovery a reality for even more Americans.

With the help of thousands of recovery advocates around the country, Faces & Voices led a successful campaign to restore RCSP funding. The recovery community mobilized to write letters to the heads of SAMHSA and CSAT as well as their members of congress objecting to the budget cuts and in just one day funding was restored!

Just weeks after the campaign, SAMHSA CSAT announced the availability of $2.5 million for grants for peer-to-peer recovery support services.

In 2007 Faces & Voices of Recovery and the recovery community have been campaigning for increased funding of RCSP programs. Click here to learn more about this campaign.
