Second Chance Act update

When members of Congress return to Washington later this month, unfinished business will include the Second Chance Act. The bill was passed by the House in November by an overwhelming 347-62 vote, but did not come to the Senate floor for a vote at the end of last year despite broad bipartisan support. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) put what’s called a “hold” on the bill when it came before the Senate, halting its progress.

The availability of medications like burpenorphine, methadone and Vivitrol for people seeking recovery from addiction in doctor’s offices as well as treatment centers has prompted some innovative work to support people newly in recovery using those medications. The Medication Assisted Recovery Services Project (MARS Project) is run by the National Alliance for Methadone Advocates with a grant from the federal government’s Recovery Community Services Program. The Maine Alliance for Addiction Recovery (MAAR) is a partner in an Advancing Recovery project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The RASE Project in Central Pennsylvania is working through Pennsylvania’s Health Choices Initiative.
