Our Stories

Gayle W.
Paisley, ON

Upon his return from his first semester at University, my son was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia, the possible aftermath of a short but intense exposure to drugs and alcohol.  At the time I was attending Al-Anon Family Groups to help me deal with the problems of living with a person with a drinking problem. The principles of recovery with the Al-Anon program also helped me to be supportive of my son in his illness, without judgment or criticism, and subsequently be able (5 or so years later) to deal more compassionately with his decision to take his own life.  I gained great comfort and strength from the members of Al-Anon Family Groups in their support and prayers at that time, and using the tools of recovery learned from the Al-Anon program I had been able to hand my son over to the care of God (my higher power) and trust that he would be looked after and guided in his life. I have also been able to share his story with others and assist them to deal with similar situations and events in their lives.
