Our Stories
Martie B.
Shallow Lake, ON, Canada
Life before recovery was a variety of blacks and greys. I felt like a bird in a cage with bars that were becoming progressively closer together. My eyes were constantly focused outward. I kept trying to keep my world under control without success. I felt hopeless and lonely. Recovery has shown me how insanely I thought and acted when trying to cope with the problem drinking of another. I have learned that I did not cause it, I cannot control it and I cannot cure it. Recovery has helped me to put my trust in a power greater than myself. I am no longer alone. Through becoming more familiar with and loving of myself, warts and all, I have been able to keep the focus on myself and allow others to pursue their own lives without my interference. Life, today, as I continue to grow, is rich, exciting and full of colour, promise and new friends who understand with whom to share the journey of recovery.
