Governors’ Recommendations for Federal Action to End the Nation’s Opioid Crisis
Opioids continue to fuel the worst drug overdose epidemic in our nation’s history, claiming the lives of 115 individuals every day and devastating families and communities across the country.1 Governors have been leading the fight against this deadly epidemic, working across all levels of government as well as with families, health care providers and others in the private sector to save lives, create a pathway to recovery for individuals struggling with addiction and prevent more people from becoming addicted. While progress has been made, the consequences of opioid addiction continue reverberating throughout society, devastating families and overwhelming health care providers, law enforcement and social services, with further downstream impacts on employers and the strength of the nation’s workforce.
