Diversion Courts: Treatment Not Punishment is a joint project of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the School of Communication and the Arts with collaboration between Marist students, faculty, and the community. The average college student, the average citizen, has little exposure to the criminal justice system, let alone to rehabilitative programming like diversion courts. This project focused on creating a documentary about how diversion courts could turn things around for those caught up in an overburdened system. Building on Alisa Roth’s 2018 book Insane: America’s Criminal Treatment of Mental Illness, we capture personal stories using in-depth interviews from drug treatment, mental-health, DWI, and veteran’s diversion courts in Judge Marcia Hirsch’s courtroom in Queens, New York, a leader in diversionary programs for the criminal justice system.
