Recovery Month

Welcome!

Welcome to Recovery Month! Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery from substance use and mental health, just as we celebrate improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease.

Each September, Recovery Month works to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible.

Recovery Month, started in 1989, is a national observance held every September to recognize the importance of evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, support the strong recovery community, and honor the tireless work of recovery service providers and community members that make recovery possible.

Paths to Recovery

Recovery is individualized and has many pathways. Pathways may include clinical, non-clinical and self-management pathways. Often, people utilize multiple paths. Following are a few examples:

  • Peer supported recovery involves the use of structured recovery mutual aid groups, peer recovery support specialists, recovery housing, collegiate recovery programs, and others to initiate and/or maintain recovery.
  • Treatment-assisted recovery uses professional help with a therapist, a doctor, or another credentialed professional. This can include medication, therapy, or a combination of the two.
  • Faith-based recovery support services are religious or spiritual frameworks of recovery that can include congregation-based support services that help during the recovery process.
  • Natural recovery occurs when a person achieves recovery from mental or substance use problems on their own through interpersonal and interpersonal resources without professional treatment or involvement in a recovery mutual aid community.

What works for one person may not work for another. It is important to support a person in or seeking recovery as they make their own decisions about which pathway is right for them.

National Rally for Recovery

For more than 30 years, throughout the month of September, local organizations and communities across the country host recovery celebrations as part of the Recovery Month observation. These activities take many forms that bring public education and attention to the realities of recovery and challenge negative attitudes, stigma, and discrimination.

For the past decade, a vital part of this tradition has included the Rally for Recovery. A main event hosted by an Alliance member organization, has been selected by the application process, to deliver a recovery-centered program that focuses on and celebrates the recovery of individuals, families, and entire communities all across America.

International Recovery Day

Until now, recovery communities have been limited to uniting and celebrating recovery by holding local rallies, walks, and other events. Through the use of the Internet we can now bridge the geographical and time zone barriers, allowing us to join all folks in recovery from all addictions, including all recovery pathways – all around the globe – all on the same day. We invite you to join our International Recovery Day community worldwide by registering on this site today. We will then send you a token by email that will allow you to launch your own virtual firework this September 30th. Later on, we will send you a reminder to go online September 30th and watch for yourself as you launch your firework into the sky – to be joined by countless others in recovery launching their own fireworks from all around the globe.
