October 29, 2025- The federal government is officially shut down—and millions of Americans are at risk of losing access to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). This critical food assistance program helps families put food on the table, and for many in recovery from substance use disorders, it’s a lifeline.

Food insecurity is a major barrier to recovery. Studies show that individuals experiencing food insecurity are significantly more likely to engage in substance use and face higher risks of returning to use. Access to nutritious food supports physical and mental health, improves treatment outcomes, and helps people stay connected to housing, employment, and community.

SNAP is especially vital for people in early recovery, who often face financial instability and health challenges. In fact, states with more inclusive SNAP policies have seen lower rates of injection drug use and unmet treatment needs.

“SNAP is more than a food assistance program—it’s a foundation for health, dignity, and recovery. During this government shutdown, we must ensure that no one loses access to the support they need to rebuild their lives. Congress must act now to protect SNAP and the millions who depend on it”– Patty McCarthy, CEO, Faces & Voices of Recovery

The USDA has the authority to keep SNAP benefits flowing during the shutdown—but they need pressure from Congress. Please call your members of Congress today and urge them to demand immediate action to protect SNAP.
