Asset-Based Accreditation
The Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services (CAPRSS) is the only accrediting body in the US specifically for Recovery Community Organizations (RCOs) and other programs offering addiction Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS).
Our Mission
To Identify and support excellence in the delivery of peer recovery support services and other activities by Recovery Community Organizations (RCOs) and qualifying programs.
Our History
This service is the culmination of years of work by recovery community advocates and allies who work every day to secure, promote and provide pathways to long-term recovery for millions of Americans, their families and their communities.
We are committed to Asset-based Accreditation (TM) that is based on
- Recovery principles
- Fair, balanced, contemporary, and focused on the “real world”
- Inclusive of information and data from peers, leadership, and the recovery community served
- Respectful and authentic
- Designed around organizational function and mission
- Based on strengths, opportunities for improvement, and emerging evidence-based practices
CAPRSS takes an “accreditation plus” philosophical approach, viewing accreditation as more than the evaluation and approval of organizations or programs based on a set of standards. CAPRSS offers a process that promotes capacity-building and the achievement of excellence within organizations from beginning to end.
Our Approach
- Helps emerging and established RCOs and peer programs to build capacity
- Improves the performance of organizations and programs providing peer services by setting and measuring the achievement of standards
- Increases accountability of peer services providers to funders, the public, and the field
- Emerging organizations seeking information and resources to develop their programs
- Established organizations looking to improve depth, breadth, scope, and quality of the peer services they provide, and preparing to seek accreditation
- “Accreditation-Ready” organizations applying for accreditation
- Accredited organizations
- State and other governmental entities seeking to support and assure the quality of peer recovery support services within their jurisdiction
Accreditation is an intense and intensive process that looks at seven areas (called domains):
- Recovery Principles, Culture and Climate
- Ethical Framework for Service Delivery
- Peer Leader Development
- Peer Supervisor Development
- Governance and Program Oversight
- Management Systems
- Peer Support Capacity: Core Competencies

Events
CAPRSS’s virtual learning community is a place for people involved in Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) to learn about topics related to the CAPRSS standards. The Learning Community is the hub for all information that can help your program to become accreditation ready.
Our introduction to accreditation course, where it:
- describes the mission and purpose of CAPRSS
- provides an overview of the standards and criteria
- describes the steps in the accreditation process
- presents resources for getting your organization accreditation-ready and for completing your application for accreditation candidacy.
This session begins at 12:00 ET and lasts 60-minutes, this includes time for your questions.
CAPRSS has developed a set of rigorous standards that come directly from the recovery community and reflect current practice in peer recovery support. The standards are the core of the accreditation process.
The CAPRSS Standards can be viewed as an external guide used to assess the capacity and efficiency of a PRSS program, in that programs that are applying for accreditation will be evaluated on the extent to which they can demonstrate their ability to meet the standards. The standards can also be considered a guide that a PRSS program can use to conduct a self-inventory, to learn more about areas of excellence and the areas that may need improvement. The second webinar in the accreditation series is designed to give you a deeper understanding of the standards. This session is designed to:
- Identify the elements of the CAPRSS standards taxonomy and how they relate
- Describe the core domains and standards
- Discuss how peer reviewers–and PRSS programs– will use standards, criteria, and elements of performance in the accreditation process.
This session begins at 12:00 ET and lasts 60-minutes, this includes time for your questions.
